First Grade News September 18th
During our daily morning meeting this week, we worked on greeting each other with a handshake. We talked about having a firm handshake, but not gripping the other person’s hand too hard or too loosely. One child came up with a great description when he said that it should be like you are holding a cup.
Our “short moment stories” are getting better and better as the children learn to add more details. I was also excited to hear the students point out incidents, that occurred during our week, which would make a great short moment story. We even planned a story together about what happened when Moses lost his tooth at the end of Wednesday.
I am so proud of the writing our first graders are doing.
The following are a few of our stories. I have corrected the spelling so that they are easier for you to read.
I went to Miller’s Fair. I had never been there before. It looked like fun.
Next, I had some good food. We had some bacon soup. Last, I walked the bridge. I saw lots of water.
I play soccer when we play games. I got my ball in the net. I got one more hit.
Me and my dad went camping. It was fun. I set up a tent. We made a bonfire. We left when we saw the bear. The bear was big and he was black.
I want Lego Batman. It looks awesome. It has a new Joker. He can light up and go in a box. But it was too much money so I went home. I played with my monster trucks outside. It was fun.
I can’t wait for you to read your child’s stories at our Open House next Thursday.
I made a Spelling Dictionary for each child and Mrs. Koehler worked with the class during enrichment on alphabetizing skills so that they would be able to use their dictionaries. The students enjoyed the alphabetizing centers that they did with Mrs. Koehler, and are excited about using their new dictionaries.
September 17th was Constitution Day. We discussed rules and laws. The students realized that the rules in our school, town, state, and country help us to remain safe, and get along with each other.
During math time, the students have been working on making tally marks. I gave each child a piece of scrap paper to use during out NWEA math test this week and I noticed lots and lots of tally marks when I collected their papers at the end of the test! It is great to see the class using a strategy that we are working on in class.
Another skill we have been working on is finding patterns when looking at a group of dots. For example, a child might see a group of 4, and a group of 6 when looking at 10 dots, or they might see 4, 2, and 4 dots. The students enjoy coming up to our Smartboard and showing their classmates the pattern they see in the dots.
