We found out that pumpkins really do float
Our Scholastic News had an article about giant pumpkins. We learned that some people actually have pumpkin "boat" races with the hollowed out pumpkins. Our finger puppet mice got in on the fun and went for a ride!
The mother of a former lafayette student knitted hats for our first graders.
With the first snow on the ground we are not only warm, but also fashionable.

Stacking Apples
After reading the Dr. Seuss story, Ten Apples Up on Top, the students tried to see how many apples they could stack before the apples fell over. Then, each team of engineers was given some clay to help with the building. The students worked well together and one team was able to stack 10 apples!
Learning About Caterpillars and Butterflies
We learned that butterflies are colorful so that they can fool their predators. Some colorful butterflies hide and disguise themselves. They are camouflaged. Others are poisonous and taste terrible. The birds learn to avoid these butterflies. Some butterflies have markings that scare away predators.
Here is the writing that the class did. I have also included some pictures of the monarch caterpillars that we are observing.
