Carving Pumpkins with Our 6th Grade Buddies
We worked with our 6th grade buddies 3 times:
1. During our first session the children planned how they wanted to carve their pumpkins and each pair of students started to write a short story about their pumpkin.
2. For the second session we cut the tops off of our pumpkins and scooped out the seeds. Each pair of students guessed how many seeds would be in their pumpkin. Their first guess was low. We had guesses of 80, 120, 70, 99, 60 and 100. Once the students saw how many seeds there were, they revised their estimates and were closer to the actual amount of seeds. Our revised estimates were 300, 160, 180, 350, 320, 550, and 200. Each team had a paper where they could keep track of how many seeds they had counted. We counted the seeds in groups of 10. The actual number of seeds was even higher than most of the estimates. The acutual number of seeds was: 750, 542, 567, 400, 441, 606, 613, 320, 400, 420, and one large pumpkin had 1000 seeds. We did a lot of counting. Some of the students suggested that we roast the seeds so we did.
3. For our 3rd session the students ate the roasted pumpkins seeds, did a fabulous job of carving the pumpkins, and we videotaped the stories they wrote.
Thank you parents for bringing in pumpkins and "safe" carving tools.
