First Grade News
Language Arts:
The class has been learning how to spell the following words which we have been using in class: mouse, count, first, going and school. I showed the class how to use our on-line spelling program, Spelling City, to practice these words. The students did a nice job of learning how to sign into the program. We have also been reading a book called Eeeny Meeny Miney Mouse. This book has repetitive phrases that allow the children to read along with me. Using this book we have focused on rhyming words and doing [-ing] words.
We have been working on forming the letter M, and learning to stay in the lines when writing. The students enjoyed following directions in order to make a picture of a mountain out of the capital letter “M.” At this time, during writing, many children in the class are using inventive spelling. This means that they write the letters that they hear. I ask the children to slowly say the word that they want to write and listen for the sounds of the letters that they know. Their words are not always spelled correctly and that is all right. Most of the children can “read” back what they intended to write. However, once I teach the children the spelling of a particular word, the children will be encouraged to spell that word correctly.
Social Studies:
Our Scholastic News article for this week was about being a good citizen. The class liked the definition that they had for the word responsible. Being responsible means that other people can trust you to do what you are supposed to do.
The children worked with students from other classes on a Peace Day project.
Mathematics:
We focused on geometric shapes and graphing this week. The children learned the 7 shapes that make up a tangram square and worked on putting the square together. The childrenn learned that a parallelogram has 4 sides. The top and bottom sides are parallel, and the left and right sides are also parallel.
